Mimi Pompom is my pseudonym. I am the former Fashion Editor of a well-known British newspaper. I am now a freelance fashion and beauty writer, living in a small and unfashionable French village in the Poitou-Charente.

  1. I never say no to a glass of pink champagne.

  3. I was brought up in The North (near Liverpool).
  4. I had never been blackberrying until I moved to France.
  5. I studied Modern History at Kings College, London University. This has not proved useful for anything.
  6. I know the Farrow & Ball colour chart inside out. This has proved very useful.
  7. I understand the 'off-side' rule.
  8. I have a passion for Turkish Hereke carpets.
  9. When I was young I wanted to be a barrister but now I write about handbags instead.
  10. On principle, I don't shop at Top Shop, Primark or Tesco.
  11. As I child I had a white English bull terrier called Bodger and a rabbit called Binkle.
  12. Most proud of: getting an A for physics O level. A lesson in how never to give up ....
  13. Biggest fashion achievement: I was the first UK fashion journalist to write about grunge.
  14. Favourite books: The Enchanted April by Elizabeth Von Arnim, Life of Pi by Yann Martell, The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton, Scoop by Auberon Waugh, Tender Is The Night by F Scott-Fitzgerald and The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton.
  15. Favourite flower: peony.
  16. Favourite brands: Prada and Pret-a-Manger (pre McDonalds).
  17. Happiest memory: crab fishing on the Ile de Ré.
  18. Least favourite memory: stuck on a fashion shoot in a safari park in Kenya with a bunch of fashion people and food poisoning.
  19. Guilty secret: I listen to Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond while driving.
  20. Favourite films: The Graduate, The September Issue and This Is Spinal Tap.
  21. People that I am least likely to invite to dinner: Harriet Harman, Vladimir Putin, Michael O'Leary, Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls.
  22. People I would most love to invite to dinner: Jeremy Paxman, Kate Moss, Michelle Obama, Anna Wintour, the Dog Whisperer and Wayne and Coleen Rooney.
  23. Biggest fear in life: people who arrive early.
  24. I am good at camping (and even better at staying in five star hotels).
  25. I cook a mean risotto (as taught by an Alain Ducasse sous-chef.)
  26. Sight that makes me smile: my dog Biff bunny-hopping through a field of wheat or lying on his back with his paws in the air.
  27. Favourite magazines: FT How To Spend It, US Vogue, Harper's Bazaar US and Madame Figaro.
  28. My younger brother and I once took a flight from Grand Cayman to New York, during which the pilot announced that we were running out of fuel, had lost contact with traffic control and our situation was ‘critical’.

  30. Words I would use to describe myself: loyal, opinionated, a perfectionist.
  31. When worried about my personal budget deficit I buy Baccarat crystal champagne glasses to cheer myself up.
